What Makes Jack Herer a Sativa, and What Keeps It From Being One
In the vocabulary seed banks use, “sativa” describes a set of linked traits: tall plants with long internodes and narrow leaflets, a long flowering time, an energetic and cerebral effect, and an aroma that runs to citrus, spice and incense rather than fuel and earth.
Those traits descend from the equatorial landraces of Colombia, Mexico, Thailand and South India, and in Jack Herer they arrive through Haze, the Californian cultivar assembled from exactly those landraces in the 1970s. “Indica” describes the opposite set, inherited from the Hindu Kush and Afghanistan: short, broad-leaved plants, fast flowering, dense resinous buds and a relaxing body effect. Jack Herer’s indica side is Northern Lights #5, present twice through Shiva Skunk, and its contribution is what makes the strain growable in a tent.
The balance is deliberate. A pure Haze flowers for 12–16 weeks, reaches three metres outdoors and tests the patience of any indoor grower; Sensi’s description of Jack Herer as a “champagne of strains” and its nine High Times Cannabis Cup titles reflect a plant that kept the Haze effect and aroma while Northern Lights #5 cut the flowering time to 60–70 days and added trichome density. The activist the strain honours, Jack Herer, author of The Emperor Wears No Clothes, died in 2010; the strain is still the standard example of a Haze made practical, and every “sativa-dominant” claim on a seed pack is a claim about how much of that Haze the breeder’s mother retained.
Sensi, WeedSeedsExpress and Seed Supreme describe the strain as 55% sativa; ILGM and Pacific Seed Bank say 60%; Green House Seeds’ different Haze × Red Skunk cross sold under the same name is 60% indica. The figures are breeder descriptions rather than measurements, but they track the phenotype each bank selected, and for a grower who wants the sativa experience they are the first filter.
The Haze Lineage Behind Jack Herer’s Sativa Character
Haze was created in Santa Cruz, California, in the 1970s by growers known as the Haze Brothers, who crossed Colombian, Mexican, Thai and South Indian sativas into a line that Neville Schoenmakers of The Seed Bank later stabilised in the Netherlands as the Haze A and Haze C males. When Sensi Seeds acquired Neville’s breeding plants it held both males, and the SeedFinder reconstruction of Jack Herer is a Haze male crossed onto a Northern Lights #5 × Shiva Skunk female, giving roughly 50% Haze, 37.5% Northern Lights #5 and 12.5% Skunk #1. Pacific Seed Bank’s description of the Haze parent as “a Sativa-dominant strain with uplifting and energetic effects” that “originated in Santa Cruz” and “consists of landrace strains from different regions, including Mexico, Colombia, Thailand, and South India” matches the record.
What Haze contributes is measurable in the plant. The leaflets are narrow and sharply serrated, which Sensi noted in its grow report as “holding true to its predominantly sativa genetic background”. Internodes lengthen after the switch to flowering and the plant can multiply its height by five, a Haze trait that Northern Lights #5 moderates but does not remove. The terpene profile is terpinolene-dominant, the signature of Haze and of most uplifting sativas, with caryophyllene and myrcene behind it. The effect is immediate and cerebral. And the flowering time, 60–70 days in most plants and 70-plus in the Haze-leaning phenotype, is Haze shortened by half.
The Haze-leaning phenotype: Jack Herer at its most sativa
Of the three phenotypes the original line throws, the Haze-leaning plant is the one a sativa grower wants and the one most feminized reproductions avoid. It has the narrowest leaflets and longest internodes by week three or four of veg, stretches hardest, finishes in 70 days or more, carries the sharpest citrus and incense aroma and the highest THC, and is the closest living relative of the Cannabis Cup entries of the 1990s. It also needs the most height. The balanced phenotype, which ILGM, Seed Supreme and WeedSeedsExpress feminized, keeps most of the effect in a more manageable plant; the Northern Lights-leaning phenotype is the strain at its least sativa. Sensi’s feminized seed and Blimburn’s are the packs most likely to lean Haze; regular Sensi seed is the only way to select for it deliberately.
| Phenotype | Sativa expression | Height / flowering | Aroma | Where found |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Haze-leaning | Strongest: most cerebral, longest-lasting | Tallest; 70+ days | Citrus, incense, pine | Sensi regular and feminized; Blimburn |
| Balanced | Full daytime effect, slight body finish | Medium; 60–65 days | Pine, pepper, light citrus | ILGM, Seed Supreme, WeedSeedsExpress |
| Northern Lights-leaning | Least sativa; relaxed end | Compact; 55–60 days | Earthy, spicy, skunk | Green House; Original Harvest |
Feminized, Regular or Autoflower: Which Jack Herer Seed Keeps the Most Sativa
Seed type decides how much of the Haze inheritance reaches the harvest. Photoperiod seed, feminized or regular, carries it in full; autoflower seed adds ruderalis, a short, fast, non-sativa subspecies that compresses the plant and shortens the effect. For a sativa grower the choice is between control and convenience.
Feminized photoperiod Jack Herer: the full sativa plant
Feminized photoperiod Jack Herer produces female plants at a rate banks quote as 99.99%, vegetates under 18 hours of light for as long as the grower chooses, and flowers 60–70 days after the switch to 12/12. It is the form that expresses the full stretch, reaching 95 cm from a 21-day veg and 1.8 m or more from a six-week veg, and the full effect, with Sensi’s lab-tested plant at 26.92% THC. Yields of 500–600 g/m² indoors and 600–800 g per outdoor plant accompany the height. The grower controls the sativa’s one liability, size, by choosing when to flip. Best for: growers with vertical space who want Jack Herer’s complete Haze character and the largest harvest.
Regular Jack Herer: selecting the Haze phenotype
Regular seed, sold only by Sensi Seeds, gives males and females at about 50/50 and all three phenotypes, which makes it the only way to select the Haze-leaning plant deliberately. The grower sorts seedlings by leaf shape at week three or four, keeps cuttings of the narrow-leaved candidates, flowers them, and retains the most sativa expression as a mother. Males must be removed before pollen sacs open, two to three weeks after the flip. Best for: growers and breeders who want the most Haze the line contains.
Jack Herer Autoflower: sativa effect in a compact plant
Autoflowering Jack Herer crosses the lineage with Cannabis ruderalis so the plant flowers on age under a constant 18/6 schedule, finishing in 70–85 days at 60–110 cm. Royal Queen Seeds calls its Royal Jack Auto “a strong Sativa dominant with an uplifting high”, ILGM claims 23% THC for its auto, and both keep the terpinolene aroma, but the plant has no stretch to speak of, a shorter effect and yields of 50–150 g. Best for: growers who want the sativa effect without the sativa height.

The Cerebral Effect: What Jack Herer’s Sativa Side Delivers
The effect that made Jack Herer a pharmacy product is the Haze effect with the edges filed off. It begins almost at once as a lift in mood and mental energy, moves into a clear, focused headspace that growers describe as creative and sociable, and lasts for hours with no crash. Seed Supreme compares the energy to “a strong cup of coffee” without caffeine’s nervousness and calls it “the only daytime strain you’ll ever need”; Pacific Seed Bank describes “heightened clarity, where the mind becomes sharp”; a WeedSeedsExpress grower reported “a great zone out buzz when I need focus. Maybe too much focus”. The 45% indica share arrives late as mild bodily relaxation, which is what distinguishes the strain from a pure Haze or a Durban Poison: the landing is soft. Every bank in this analysis classifies it as a daytime strain, and the Dutch programme dispensed it as Bedrocan for the same reliable profile. None of this is a medical claim, and effects vary by phenotype, dose and individual.
The aroma is a sativa aroma. Terpinolene, the terpene most associated with uplifting Haze-family strains, dominates and supplies fresh citrus and pine; caryophyllene adds black pepper; myrcene is present but secondary, which is why there is no couch-lock; nerolidol and limonene add floral and sweet-citrus notes in the Haze-leaning phenotype. Sensi described its cured harvest as “fresh, citrusy” with “a hint of fresh pine, reminiscent of a walk through a lush pine forest” and a flavour of earth, spice, sweetness and cinnamon.

Growing a Sativa That Stretches: Jack Herer Indoors and Out
The whole art of growing Jack Herer is managing a sativa’s height in a space built for indicas.
WeedSeedsExpress rates the strain “Advanced” and ILGM “Beginner”, and both are right: a Haze-leaning plant flipped at 60 cm in a 1.5 m tent will hit the light, while a balanced plant flipped at 20 cm, as Sensi did, finishes under a metre with no training at all. Outdoors the same inheritance is an asset, because a plant that reaches 2.4 m in full sun yields 600–800 g. Everything else about the grow is standard, and the Sensi reference grow applies.
Germination and a short vegetative period
The paper-towel method required by most banks’ guarantees applies, with about 90% germination from fresh seed and Pacific’s advice to buy 10% more than needed. The sativa-specific decision comes next: how long to vegetate. Sensi flipped at 21 days and 19 cm; a grower with 1.5 m of clearance should do the same, and a grower with 2 m can allow four to five weeks. The rule is to flip at one-fifth of the available height, because the plant can multiply its size by five.
- SoakSoak the seeds in room-temperature distilled water for 12–24 hours until they sink.
- Paper towelsLay them 3–5 cm apart between damp paper towels on a plate and cover.
- Dark and warmKeep in the dark at 21–25 °C; check the towels stay moist.
- PlantPlant when the taproot reaches 1–1.5 cm, root down, 5–10 mm deep in a starter cube or 1-litre pot.
- Vegetate and measureVegetate at 18/6, 21–27 °C and 60–65% RH; measure the ceiling and plan the flip at one-fifth of it.
- Transplant and flipTransplant to the final 5–11 litre pot in week two and flip when the plant reaches the planned height, typically 20–40 cm.
Managing the stretch indoors
After the switch to 12/12 a Jack Herer stretches for three to four weeks, and Sensi’s data gives the curve: 19 cm at the flip, 32 cm a week later, then 44, 57 and 77 cm, with the single largest gain of 20 cm in week eight, before growth slowed and bud mass took over. Temperatures of 21–26 °C with lights on and a few degrees cooler off, humidity of 55–60% through the stretch falling to 45–52% in the last weeks, uninterrupted darkness, and a carbon filter from mid-flower complete the environment. A sativa canopy benefits from lights that can be raised quickly; LED fixtures with adjustable hangers and a minimum of 40 cm of travel are the practical answer, and a heat-free light source lets the canopy sit closer at the end.

Outdoor Jack Herer: a sativa’s season
Outdoors Jack Herer wants what its Haze ancestors had: warmth, sun and a long season. In the Northern Hemisphere it is planted after the last frost, vegetates through June and July, begins flowering as days shorten in August and finishes from late September to mid-October; in the Southern Hemisphere the window is late March to mid-April. The Haze-leaning phenotype can run into late October and needs a climate without early autumn rain, because its long colas hold moisture. Plants reach 1.8–2.4 m and 600–800 g in open ground, which makes staking essential on windy sites; one verified grower reported six-foot plants that “it is a must to train/stabilize”. In cooler or wetter climates the practical sativa answer is the autoflower, which finishes in 75–85 days regardless of season, or a greenhouse that extends warmth into October.
| Climate | Photoperiod Jack Herer | Jack Herer Auto |
|---|---|---|
| Mediterranean / California-type | Ideal; 2–2.4 m, 600–800 g, harvest early–mid October | Two to three harvests per season |
| Continental, warm summer | Good; harvest late September; watch early rain | Reliable; plant May and July |
| Maritime, cool and wet | Risky; bud rot in October; greenhouse advised | Preferred; finishes before autumn rain |
| Southern Hemisphere temperate | Plant October, harvest late March–mid April | Any month with 12+ warm weeks |
Training a sativa: SCROG first, topping second
Training is the sativa grower’s main tool, and screen of green is the technique built for a plant that stretches. A net fitted at 20–30 cm above the pots in late veg is filled during the stretch by weaving each branch sideways as it grows through, producing a flat canopy of equal colas and using the Haze vigour to make yield rather than height; Green House and WeedSeedsExpress both recommend SCROG or SOG for the strain. Topping above the fourth or fifth node at least ten days before the flip halves the final height and doubles the main colas. Low-stress training bends the long, flexible side branches outward without cutting and is the right choice for the autoflower. Sensi’s untrained plant, with one dominant apical cola over a lower canopy, is the textbook picture of what a screen prevents.
- When: net in late veg, filled during the 3–4 week stretch
- Effect: flat canopy, height converted to yield
- When: node 4–5, ten days before 12/12
- Effect: two main colas, height halved
- When: throughout veg; autoflowers in weeks 2–3
- Effect: wider canopy, no recovery time
Problems a tall sativa brings
Most of Jack Herer’s problems are consequences of its height and its long flower. The canopy reaches the light. The tall, dense colas of a Haze-leaning plant hold moisture and rot if late-flower humidity exceeds 52%. The long flowering time gives spider mites and thrips more time to establish, which is why Sensi released predatory mites preventively from week one. The plant’s stretch outruns a rigid light fixture. And the strong pine-citrus odour from mid-flower is louder than an indica’s. Overwatering and nutrient excess are the generic errors; Sensi fed EC 1.3–1.8 at pH 6.2 without burn.
| Problem | Symptom | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Canopy reaches the light | Bleached or burnt tops | Flip at one-fifth of ceiling; SCROG; adjustable hangers |
| Bud rot in long colas | Brown, soft cores late in flower | RH 45–52%; airflow through the canopy; rain cover outdoors |
| Spider mites / thrips over a long flower | Stippling, webbing, silver streaks | Preventive predatory mites from week one; weekly inspection |
| Wind damage outdoors | Snapped branches on 2 m plants | Stake or cage before August |
| Odour | Pine-citrus from week 6 of flower | Carbon filter sized to the extraction fan |
Stretch Data: Sensi’s Jack Herer From 19 cm to 95 cm
Sensi Seeds’ March 2023 feminized grow report is the only published, lab-verified record of a Jack Herer grow, and for a sativa grower its value is the height curve. One feminized seed was germinated in a jiffy pellet, grown in BAC Lava Mix soil in a 1-litre and then a 5-litre pot under a 1000 W Philips HPS fixed at 300 cm, fed Bio Grow and Bio Flower at EC 1.3–1.8 and pH 6.2, kept at 23 °C with lights on and 21 °C off, and switched to 12/12 after only 21 days at a height of 19 cm. No training, topping or defoliation was applied; predatory insects were released preventively in weeks one, three, four, seven and eight.
The plant then did what a Haze descendant does. It grew to 32 cm in the first week of flower, 44 in the second, 57 in the third and 77 in the fourth, a gain of 20 cm in week eight alone, before slowing to 84, 93, 94 and a final 95 cm. Sensi noted that it “has more than doubled in height since initiating the flowering cycle, which is something to consider for growing spaces with limited ceiling height”, and described narrow, sharply serrated leaves “holding true to its predominantly sativa genetic background”. Flowering ran 70 days; the plant was harvested in week thirteen on mostly milky trichomes, dried 18 days at 15.5 °C and 60% RH, cured six weeks, and yielded 80 g that a third-party laboratory tested at 26.92% THC. Sensi called it an easy plant for all levels. A sativa grower reads the same report as a demonstration that a short veg and a tall ceiling are the two decisions that make it so.

Which Breeders’ Jack Herer Seeds Lean Most Sativa
Ranked by how much Haze the pack retains, the field sorts by the breeder’s stated ratio, the phenotype its mother expresses and the flowering time it quotes. Sensi Seeds’ original, at 55/45 with a 70-day flower and the full phenotype spread, is the most sativa option and the only regular seed. Blimburn’s 60/40 feminized leans Haze. ILGM and Pacific describe 60% sativa with 63 and 50–70 day flowers, which marks a balanced mother. Seed Supreme and WeedSeedsExpress describe 55% sativa with the same balanced expression. Green House Seeds’ Haze × Red Skunk, at 60% indica, is the least sativa plant sold under the name and belongs on an indica page. The autoflowers from Royal Queen Seeds and ILGM are described as sativa-dominant but compressed by ruderalis.

Jack Herer Against the Pure and Near-Pure Sativas
A sativa grower weighing Jack Herer is usually weighing it against plants with more Haze and less compromise. Super Silver Haze, which Jack Herer helped create through Super Jack, is 90% sativa with a 10–11 week flower; Super Lemon Haze is 80% sativa, more lemon, 65–75 days; Durban Poison is a 100% landrace sativa that flowers in 60–65 days, resists mould and gives clarity with no body effect; Amnesia Haze is the potent, 12-week option for growers with height and patience. Jack Herer’s argument against all of them is the same: the Haze effect and aroma with a 60–70 day flower, a tent-compatible height when flipped early, and the soft landing of its indica side.
| Strain | Sativa / indica | Flowering | Height outdoors | THC | Why choose it over Jack Herer |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Jack Herer | 55/45 | 60–70 days | 1.8–2.4 m | 18–24%; 26.92% lab | Haze effect in a manageable, fast plant |
| Super Silver Haze | 90/10 | 70–77 days | 2.5 m+ | 19–23% | More Haze intensity; Jack Herer descendant line |
| Super Lemon Haze | 80/20 | 65–75 days | 2–2.5 m | 20–25% | Louder lemon terpenes |
| Durban Poison | 100/0 | 60–65 days | 2–2.5 m | 18–22% | Pure sativa clarity, mould resistance, no body effect |
| Amnesia Haze | 80/20 | 77–84 days | 2.5 m+ | 20–22% | Maximum Haze; needs height and time |
| Jack Herer Auto | Sativa-dominant + ruderalis | 10–12 weeks total | 0.6–1.1 m | 18–23% | Sativa effect without the height |

↑ Back to contentsLegal Status of Jack Herer Seeds by Region
Whether a seed is sativa, indica or hybrid has no legal meaning: the law looks at the seed’s negligible THC content and, separately, at whether germination is permitted where the buyer lives. Buying and possessing seeds is lawful in far more places than growing them, and a two-metre outdoor sativa is harder to keep within plant-count and visibility rules than a compact indica. The summary reflects October 2026; it is not legal advice, laws change, and readers must verify the rules of their own state, province or country before ordering or germinating.
What Growers Say About Jack Herer’s Sativa Growth and Effect
Reviews of Jack Herer describe a sativa in both senses. On growth, a WeedSeedsExpress buyer recorded phenotypes “leaning to the sativa heritage topping out at 1.8 m indoors” even after super-cropping and advised that it “would be a good choice for anyone who has the vertical space”; an outdoor grower on the same site reported six-foot plants that had to be stabilised against wind. On effect, the same reviewer found “a great zone out buzz when I need focus. Maybe too much focus”, and Pacific Seed Bank buyers describe “monsters” with “thick stems that can support heavy buds”. Ratings are 4.8 from 174 reviews at ILGM, 4.66 from 150 at Pacific, 4.88 at The Seed Fair and 4.7 from 3,154 store reviews at WeedSeedsExpress. The complaint that a reproduction is “not true Jack” points to the mother-selection issue in the lineage section.

Jack Herer Sativa Seeds: Questions About Haze, Height and Effect
The answers below use the figures in the sativa profile; legal and health answers carry the same disclaimers as the sections above.
The sativa side
Is Jack Herer a sativa or an indica?
A sativa-dominant hybrid: 55% sativa by Sensi’s description and 60% by ILGM’s, roughly half Haze by descent, with Northern Lights #5 and Shiva Skunk supplying the indica 45%. Green House’s different Haze × Red Skunk cross sold under the same name is 60% indica.
Where does Jack Herer’s sativa character come from?
From Haze, the Santa Cruz cultivar built from Colombian, Mexican, Thai and South Indian landraces and stabilised by Neville’s Seed Bank. A Haze male crossed onto a Northern Lights #5 × Shiva Skunk female produced the strain in 1994.
Who created the Jack Herer strain and when?
Sensi Seeds in Amsterdam launched Jack Herer in 1994, named after the activist and author Jack Herer.
What is the THC level of Jack Herer?
Breeders claim 18–24%; Sensi’s lab-tested plant recorded 26.92%, and the Haze-leaning phenotype carries the most. CBD is 0.1–2%.
What are the effects of Jack Herer’s sativa side?
An immediate, energetic and euphoric lift into clear, creative focus lasting hours, with mild relaxation from the indica side at the end and no crash. A daytime strain. Dry mouth, dry eyes and, at larger doses, anxiety or racing thoughts are the reported adverse effects.
What terpenes give Jack Herer its sativa aroma?
Terpinolene, the signature terpene of Haze-family sativas, supplies citrus and pine; caryophyllene adds pepper; myrcene is secondary; nerolidol and limonene add floral and sweet-citrus notes in the Haze-leaning phenotype.
Which Jack Herer phenotype is the most sativa?
The Haze-leaning phenotype: narrowest leaflets, longest internodes, hardest stretch, 70-plus days of flowering, citrus-incense aroma and the highest THC. Sensi regular seed is the only way to select it deliberately; Sensi feminized and Blimburn are the packs most likely to carry it.
Is Jack Herer good for anxiety?
It is widely described as uplifting, but potent sativas are the class most associated with anxiety at higher doses, and the Haze-leaning phenotype is the most intense. This is not medical advice; anyone considering cannabis for a health condition should speak to a physician.
Growing a sativa
How much does Jack Herer stretch after 12/12?
Three to five times. Sensi’s untrained plant went from 19 cm at the flip to 95 cm at harvest, with a 20 cm gain in the fourth week of flower. Flip at about one-fifth of the available height.
How tall does Jack Herer grow?
95 cm after a 21-day veg, 1.8 m or more after six weeks indoors, and 1.8–2.4 m outdoors. Autoflower versions stay at 60–110 cm.
How long is the flowering time of Jack Herer?
60–70 days after the switch to 12/12 for most plants, 70 or more for the Haze-leaning phenotype, short for a Haze descendant. Outdoors, harvest falls in late September to mid-October in the Northern Hemisphere.
Can I grow Jack Herer in a small tent?
Yes, with a short veg: flip at 20 cm as Sensi did and the plant finishes under a metre. Top ten days before the flip or use a screen of green for more control, or choose the autoflower for a 1.2 m ceiling.
Is SCROG or topping better for Jack Herer?
SCROG converts the stretch into a flat, productive canopy and is recommended by Green House and WeedSeedsExpress; topping halves height and doubles main colas. Many growers do both; low-stress training is the choice for autos.
What climate does Jack Herer need outdoors?
Warm, sunny and relatively dry with a long season, 21–27 °C: Mediterranean-type conditions suit its Haze heritage. In cool, wet climates the autoflower or a greenhouse is the practical option.
What yield can I expect from Jack Herer?
500–600 g/m² indoors and 600–800 g per outdoor plant; Sensi’s untrained plant gave 80 g in a 5-litre pot. The Haze-leaning phenotype yields most outdoors with full sun and support.
Is Jack Herer easy to grow for beginners?
ILGM says beginner, WeedSeedsExpress says advanced; the difference is height. With 1.8 m of clearance, a short veg, stable humidity and a carbon filter a first-time grower can finish it, and Sensi’s report shows it needs no training. The autoflower is the easier sativa entry.
Does Jack Herer smell strong while growing?
Yes; the pine-citrus aroma is louder than most indicas’ from mid-flower. A carbon filter is needed indoors.
